I really like this U-lock for my scooter. I’ve been using it since the beginning of the semester and it’s been working great. It fits perfectly on all the scooter parking spots at Fresno State, which makes it super convenient. I definitely recommend it for college students.

This Via Velo U-lock is a solid option if you want something secure without spending too much. The lock itself feels strong and well-built, and it gives me confidence leaving my bike locked up in public.The included cable is a nice bonus. It makes it easy to secure both wheels or extra parts instead of just the frame, which is really useful. I also like that it comes with a mount so you can attach it to your bike and not have to carry it around.It is a little heavy, but that’s expected for a lock like this and worth it for the added security.

This locks is very suitable for my purposes. The price was right and the quality seems good. I like the fact that it is covered with a rubbery material that keeps it from scratching my bike.The mount for the bike is fine but its a bit of effort to get the cable secured with the lock in such a way that it does not interfere with riding. On my bike I have a basket and usually throw the lock in the basket in transit so this is not such a problem for me.We bought two of these locks. One for me and one for my partner. He dropped the key for his in the water beside our boat at the dock which means he is down to one key.I saw this lock on sale on Amazon the other day for about $20 but did not order another one like I should have. If it goes on sale again Ill get my partner another lock and use his old one to lock a shopping cart to the door handle of one of those people who take up two parking places to protect their beautiful cars from the unwashed masses. For this alternative application a spare key, or even one key, would not be necessary.Update October 9: As I mentioned above my partner dropped one of the keys for his lock into the water beside our boat. When the folks at Via Velo read my review they immediately contacted me for my mailing address and the key code. They shipped spare keys, from China, for his lock. They work fine. I had the new keys in less than a week so now we don’t have to worry about breaking out the hacksaw if my partner dropped his remaining key in the drink.In the time since I wrote my original review I have used this lock dozens of times and when I lock my bike at the gym I look at the other bikes with the $100 locks on them and cant see the difference between those and my Via Velo lock. When you add to the quality of the product the obvious commitment to customer service this company has, I am enthusiastic about what other products these folks might offer.

Got this to secure my Lectric XP 4.0 bike and my wifes Lectric XP2.0 trike to our RV while camping. The 5 ft. cable was just barely long enough to secure both bikes to the trailer. It’ll work, but I wished there was an option for a longer cable. Aside from this I like not having yet another key to put on the key chain to unlock the bikes.

Caveat as always is that any lock, no matter how beefy, is intended primarily to slow down a thief and give you (and hopefully passersby and security cameras) enough time to intervene or at make sure there’s some evidence left behind to follow up on. Power tools and a determined thief are going to eventually get their way, but what a lock this heavy does is encourage a thief to potentially find an easier target. Bike thieves aren’t interested in extra attention, they want to grab what they can grab and make it out before authorities can be called.In terms of deterrents this is a very good one. This lad is HEAVY. A good U-Lock like this is already encouraged for people serious about protecting their bike, but the nearly .5 inches of a steel cable is nothing to sneeze at either. Many of the standard-issue cables that people loop around their crossbar for quick in-and-outs at stores are going to be maybe half to 3/4 of that, pretty easily defeated by wire cutters. A cable this thick in combination with a U-Lock is going to be an incredibly effective visual deterrent, especially if your bike is a bit older, and will take longer to saw through. Bike thieves are masters of cost/benefit analyses and if a bike doesn’t look like it’s worth the potential risk of sawing through something THIS heavy, it’s going to be passed up for an easier mark.The U-Lock is definitely the star of the show. It’s super slick. The instructions were easy to understand, setting the password requires very little fuss, and once you click it back into place, the lock will keep that password until you physically reset it with the included key. The THUNK it makes when it slides into place is incredibly satisfying. Only time will tell if the PVC coating on it will 100% prevent rust — water is sneaky and usually gets its way in the end — but in examining all the various nooks and crannies for potential vulnerabilities, I do feel it’s going to take a little while as it both looks and feels sturdily built to last.Another plus about this U-Lock is that it has a long neck, so if you’re interested in hooking up extra bikes or threading some other things into the loop, there’s more than enough room to do that. I’m the type to store my bike indoors whenever possible, so while I do intend to use this when I take my bike out for errands, I’m actually interested in trying the lock out with other backyard equipment. Any lock like this is inherently multipurpose, and since this one is such solid quality, I feel pretty confident I can rely on it for a number of other uses if for whatever reason I need to leave a project in progress overnight under a tarp.There are a lot of factors that go into securing your bike, but if you don’t mind the weight of this, this is extremely effective. A visual deterrent is half the battle and if a thief still chooses to target a bike with a lock and cable *this* hefty on it, it’s going to take some real elbow grease on their part to get that done and increase the chances of them simply giving up if it’s taking too long. Winner in my book!

This is a very sturdy and imposing lock. I found the combo very easy to change from the factory setting and can easily change it again if I like. This is a good size to use in combo with a cable to keep the wheels of the bike secured along with the frame. This is very heavy, but I think it will be a respectable deterrent to casual opportunists. It had better work, it cost more thank my bike! The cable comes with it and is sturdy and of a perfect length ~ don’t be worried, the lock will arrive one day and a few days later the cable shows up!
