Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I started cycling last year and didn’t believe they hype train for the direction many people take the hobby. I avoided shoes that snapped into the pedals, I didn’t buy the fastest possible bike, and my seat wasn’t going to be a 3in piece of hard plastic that had a non-zero chance of being inserted into an uncomfortable position. I’ve learned that my bike frame does make a difference, the pedals don’t to any significant degree, and my seat has viable comfortable options available. Last year I challenged myself to ride a century ride (100mi) every month. In July I rode back to back 125mi rides over two days (total of 250mi) on this seat. For a man with a slightly wider hip set (I’m 5’11 200lbs) the touring seat is a dream. It’s formed so if you’re seated right your butt bones will connect in the right spot, but it also provides additional cushion. I’ve put about 3000mi on the seat so far, and while it looks used now, there are not splits and signs of significant wear. Many people warned me that cushioned seats will hurt you over time, but anecdotally I have proven that incorrect. If I rode 250mi over two days and this seat didn’t cause sore/welts etc, then I’m inclined to believe it will work for just about any amateur or hobby rider. You’re still going to need to get used to it. Cycling will always hurt your butt after hours of saddle time, by the end of the season last year though, my butt felt just fine after each new century. Buy this one. It’s the best bet for a sore butt. Also, don’t forget to use an anti chafe/perspiration cream or bar. The seat makes you comfortable, it doesn’t do magic. Quick Update: I bought a carbon fiber road bike from Canyon and wanted to try the road variant of this seat on it. While the seat is cushy and the same quality, my hips just don’t want to connect with the smaller seat as well. I’ve doubled down and bought a second “Touring” edition so I don’t have to move my original touring wikkitop seat back and forth from my hybrid and road bikes. Anyone that is a smaller frame or narrower hips, the road variant may be your go to, but for me I’m just going to continue using the touring seat. UPDATE: I’ve completed about a dozen century rides and one ride of 170 mi. I’ve also bought a second of these seats for my commuter bike. For my butt this seat does the trick. With bicycle shorts I get no saddle sores and very little sore butt. Keep in mind that any seat is going to hurt when you first start, you have to condition your body for bicycling Update 2: I’ve now ridden STP (Seattle to Portland) and can say this seat held up to a 200+ mile ride. I have noticed some breakdown in the cushion of my original seat. This is after about 5-7 thousand miles. I think that’s reasonable durability. Eventually I’ll replace that seat, but I’m still using it now. This seat remains 5 stars all day.

Customer Review: I’ve ridden 72 miles in 2 days on this saddle so far. After some usual adjusting from my last saddle during my first 40 miles of height and tilt, I’ve found this to be one of the most comfortable saddles I’ve used on my rode bike. I’m 69 years young and my butt bones sit comfortably on this saddle. I’ve got a much smoother and satisfying ride now and can put my concentration elsewhere.

Customer Review: Why did you pick this product vs others?: The reviews didn’t let me down. This saddle is a complete game changer!

Customer Review: After going through at least five saddles trying to alleviate pressure sores on my girlie bits I have found some relief. Why do bike saddles have noses anyway? After installing this saddle (and following their detailed instructions to the letter) I took my trusty Trek out for a 25 mile ride. For the first time EVER (like in my entire life of 49 years) I came back with NO pain in the crotch area. I have told anyone who will listen (and many who won’t) about this saddle. Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Went through a few saddles trying to find one that was right. I like this one a lot as it’s just soft enough for longer rides with climbs to be comfortable, but it’s not too soft where you have no support when you need it. Good shape, quality built, fair price.

Customer Review: I would not describe this as “comfortable” in the sense of a soft, squishy chair. The Volt is very thin, firm, and dense. However, I would say it is very comfortable in the sense that it supports you properly and allows you to ride uninhibited. If you’re looking for something soft and squishy, you should not be looking at any WTB products. Now with that out of the way, here’s why I’m loving this saddle: For reference, I’m coming from a Marin Fairfax with the stock saddle. This Volt saddle is actually slightly firmer than the stock Marin saddle. But it feels completely different. I would say the Volt probably has about 1 inch of very firm padding. However, it is extremely effective. The shape is really what makes it work. Slight curvature which is very noticeable while sitting. This gives you a few different positions. Slide back on the saddle and hunch down, and you are sitting on the “whale tail”, the up-curved back. This feels good, and gives you a little extra leg power. Slide forward and sit up, and your sit-bones are cradled near the center edges, which actually relieves a ton of pressure, as you’re able to be supported partially by the sit-bones and partially by the fatty part of your butt up against the tail of the saddle. Switching between these positions during your ride helps give your sit-bones a little rest. That was something I couldn’t do with my stock saddle. Normally I enjoy long rides of 20+ miles (2+ hours) on roads/pavement. Recently I did a 70 mile ride. Generally on my old saddle after 20 miles I would start to get sore, mainly from lack of different sitting positions or from chafing. I also tried a gel pad/cover for added squish. It felt softer, but didn’t help with long distance. According to WTB, less padding will be more comfortable for longer rides. Enter the Volt. It supports your body and reduces pressure points. The best thing about this saddle is that you’ll literally forget it’s there – after completing a long ride I realized that during the ride I hadn’t had to stand up once! I used to stand up constantly on the old saddle to get a quick break from the pressure and chafing. The outer material is fantastic. It’s not sticky or plasticy feeling like most other saddles. It feels like a premium leather-like material that has the perfect amount of grip but is still easy to slide around on. So my final verdict is: After fine-tuning the position and tilt of this saddle, it is really comfortable and eliminates almost all pressure. Once you adjust to how it feels you’ll forget it’s there. I would NOT recommend it for the average person who is looking for a comfy chair; but it is a great option for enthusiasts who ride a lot. I was debating between the WTB Pure, Speed, and Volt. I did end up getting the Pure as well, but have to say that the Volt is superior to the Pure for endurance. The Pure is just a tiny bit longer and wider, and has probably 1/4 inch more padding. But the extra comfort of the Pure means it starts to wear on you after a couple hours. The volt being so small and thin is actually what makes it more comfortable for the long-haul.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Mountain Bike Saddles

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best mountain bike saddles, we look at several critical factors. First and foremost is comfort; a saddle that causes pain is useless, no matter how high-tech it is. We consider the padding type and density, the saddle’s shape (including its width and contouring), and whether it has ergonomic cutouts or channels to relieve pressure. Durability is also key, as mountain biking can be tough on components. We assess the quality of materials, the robustness of the rails, and the overall construction. Finally, we think about the intended use; a saddle perfect for long-distance trail riding might not be ideal for aggressive downhill runs. We also factor in the rider’s anatomy, as sit bone width and riding position play a significant role in saddle choice. Thinking about how to prepare a mountain bike for long rides often starts with a comfortable saddle.

Budget Planning

Mountain bike saddles can range from budget-friendly options under $30 to high-end models costing over $200. For beginners or those on a tighter budget, there are excellent choices like the ROCKBROS or Wittkop saddles that offer great comfort and performance without breaking the bank. If you’re looking for advanced features, specialized designs like the BiSaddle, or premium materials, expect to invest more. Remember that a good saddle is an investment in your riding experience, so it’s worth allocating a reasonable portion of your budget to it. If you’re exploring the market for a new bike, checking out some best budget mountain bike for beginners can also help you understand the value spectrum.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best mountain bike saddle is subjective and depends heavily on your personal preferences and riding style. What works wonders for one rider might not be ideal for another. Take the time to understand your needs, consider the features outlined above, and don’t be afraid to try a few different options if possible. A well-chosen saddle can transform your time on the trail, allowing you to push further and enjoy every moment. For those looking to maximize their riding potential, understanding different mountain bike frame material comparison can also contribute to a more informed purchase decision, impacting overall ride feel and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the most important factor when choosing a mountain bike saddle?

A: The most important factor is comfort, which is highly personal and depends on your anatomy and riding style. A saddle that doesn’t fit you comfortably will hinder your performance and enjoyment.

Q: How do I know what width saddle I need?

A: Saddle width is typically determined by your sit bone width and your riding position. Wider saddles are generally better for upright riding positions, while narrower saddles suit more aggressive, bent-over positions. Many brands offer saddles in multiple widths, and measuring your sit bones is a good starting point.

Q: Is a padded saddle always better for mountain biking?

A: Not necessarily. While some padding is beneficial, excessive softness can lead to pressure points and chafing on longer rides. Many mountain bikers prefer saddles with firm, supportive padding that allows for easy movement and efficient power transfer. The key is finding the right balance for your riding style.

Q: How often should I replace my mountain bike saddle?

A: Mountain bike saddles are generally durable and can last for many years with proper care. However, if you notice significant wear, cracks, or a loss of structural integrity, it’s time for a replacement. Signs of damage or discomfort can also indicate it’s time for a new saddle.

Q: Can I use a road bike saddle on my mountain bike?

A: While you can physically attach a road bike saddle to a mountain bike, it’s usually not ideal. Road bike saddles are often designed for more aggressive, forward-leaning positions and may lack the durability or specific features needed for rugged off-road riding.

Choosing the right mountain bike saddle is a crucial step towards enjoying your rides to the fullest. Whether you’re tackling challenging trails or enjoying a leisurely cruise, a comfortable and supportive saddle makes all the difference.
