Customer Reviews

“Well, I purchased my first ever electric scooter (at 74) that has a seat and rear basket from Amazon and in the product manual it states to use safety gear. Well, I only travel 1/2 mile round trips to work so I ignored that warning; the result was I took a hard fall and bruised my ribs; banged my knee; scraped my elbow and yes, banged my head on the sidewalk. That was a hard lesson learned !!! So this was one of the safety items I purchased. The helmet is solid! It’s a one size fits all so I’m not sure what to say about that. I do know that out of the box it fits me perfectly; a little tight but I prefer it that way. I really like the added safety light in the back of the helmet. Lights really well for when I leave work at midnight. Not sure how to change the battery, when needed, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes.I guess my only gripe is that rain visor on the front of the helmet; it comes off easily but that is actually my fault because I store it in my old backpack that is secured to the rear basket which is probably a little bit too tight for my helmet. But, at work I have to store it or everyone will play with the helmet and light. This is definitely a 5-star product!!!Well constructed; great added safety feature with the rear helmet light; solid straps; comfortable!”

– An experienced rider

“This is a good helmet! It’s comfortable & easy to use, fit, & adjust. I love that it has a light for being seen. It’s a nice color & a reasonable price. Finally, I feel that it offers a good level of safety & I’m going to dispose of our old helmets. It is lightweight & has ventilation. This new helmet is SO much nicer than the old helmets!”

Customer Reviews

“For reference: I have a 23 inch large noggin. Kind of “long headed” with low ears. This helmet in “Large” fits me well, with a little slack on the sides/temples (long headed), with the rear adjuster just barely tightened down a click or two.The strap’s “ear V” can be adjusted up/down, forward/back at the bottom of the “V” so it does not intrude on your ear. The chin strap is padded near the buckle and the magnetic pull thingy works really well, very/quick easy to get off. It does have an elastic “tie-down” on the back for your goggles, wads of money, band-aids, clean underwear, or whatever use you can find for that. Perhaps a little sign that says, “If you can read this, BACK OFF!”The visor is ~twice as long as most I’ve seen, so it might actually serve a purpose unlike the tiny 1 inch Donald Duck bills on most of them. It attaches with two hand screws on either side and a snap-in peg at the center. The front vents have a “bug net” built into them, a nice “premium” touch. You can see it in my pics if you’re looking for it.I went to WallyWorld and looked at helmets by Ozark Trail, Schwinn, Bell, and Mongoose, ranging from $19-$49 and every one of them was worse than this helmet as far as fit and the padding inside. They had tiny, thin little strips of pad held in by flimsy, barely usable velcro tape spheres. This Favoto helmet has decent, wide pads that go all the way around to the back, sides, and even on the adjuster at the rear. I have not seen a higher end $100+ helmet to compare to, but for the price this one seems quite good. Also, I believe all the MIPS stuff is snake oil, marketing nonsense that only “tests better” due to the fact they strap the helmets on to dummys SO tightly they have no ability to shift/rotate so that the MIPS shell comes into play. In reality, your helmet can shift/rotate a bit without MIPS just fine (unless you’re bolting it to your skull), and when tested that way, MIPS does Jack + Squat. All it does is raise your helmet that much more off your head, making you look even more like a window licking mushroom head.I really can’t think of anything to complain about. One of the straps was a bit twisted up in the ear buckle area and I had to fiddle with it for a minute? After I go ride off a 40 foot cliff, or slam myself into a tree, I’ll come back and edit-report about how well it performed…or not. If I don’t edit soon, don’t assume it failed, and that I am leaking grey matter at the bottom of a canyon. I may have just not found an “opportunity” to crash yet…and we don’t have canyons in Michigan. >:0)EDIT: Went for a few rides with it on now and comfort is good. I more or less forgot it was on. No crashes to report…yet.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Mountain Bike Helmet

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best mountain bike helmet, we look at several critical factors. First and foremost is safety certification – ensuring the helmet meets or exceeds industry standards like CPSC. We then evaluate the helmet’s construction, looking for a durable outer shell and effective impact-absorbing EPS foam. Ventilation is key for comfort on long rides, so we check the number and placement of vents. Adjustability is also crucial; a good helmet should have a reliable retention system that allows for a snug, personalized fit. Finally, we consider added features like visors, integrated lights, or compatibility with action cameras.

Budget Planning

Mountain bike helmets range from budget-friendly options to premium models. For around $50-$100, you can find excellent helmets that offer solid protection and good features, like the Favoto and Exclusky options we reviewed. If your budget allows for $100-$200, you’ll find helmets with advanced safety technologies like MIPS, lighter materials, and more sophisticated ventilation systems, such as the VICTGOAL and Retrospec helmets. Remember, investing in a quality helmet is an investment in your safety, so try to find the best one that fits your budget and needs.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best mountain bike helmet is the one you’ll actually wear. It needs to be comfortable, fit well, and provide adequate protection. Don’t be afraid to try on different models if possible. Consider the type of riding you do most often – aggressive trail riding might warrant a helmet with more coverage, while cross-country might prioritize lighter weight and ventilation. The helmets we’ve reviewed offer a great starting point, covering a range of preferences and budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the most important safety feature in a mountain bike helmet?

A: The most important safety feature is meeting industry safety standards (like CPSC in the US). Beyond that, a helmet’s ability to absorb impact through its EPS foam and durable shell is critical. Technologies like MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) are designed to reduce rotational forces during angled impacts, adding an extra layer of protection.

Q: How often should I replace my mountain bike helmet?

A: It’s recommended to replace your helmet every 3-5 years, even if it hasn’t been in a crash. Over time, the materials can degrade due to UV exposure, sweat, and general wear and tear. Of course, if your helmet has been involved in a crash, it should be replaced immediately, as even minor impacts can compromise its protective integrity.

Q: How do I know if a mountain bike helmet fits correctly?

A: A properly fitting helmet should sit level on your head, covering your forehead. It should feel snug but not uncomfortably tight. You should be able to run your finger between the straps and your chin without being able to fit more than one or two fingers. When you shake your head, the helmet should stay in place without wobbling.

Q: Are more expensive helmets always better?

A: Not necessarily. While premium helmets often feature lighter materials, advanced safety tech, and superior ventilation, a less expensive helmet that meets safety standards and fits you well can still offer excellent protection. It’s more about finding the right fit and features for your needs and budget rather than just the price tag.
