Customer Reviews

“Well, I purchased my first ever electric scooter (at 74) that has a seat and rear basket from Amazon and in the product manual it states to use safety gear. Well, I only travel 1/2 mile round trips to work so I ignored that warning; the result was I took a hard fall and bruised my ribs; banged my knee; scraped my elbow and yes, banged my head on the sidewalk. That was a hard lesson learned !!! So this was one of the safety items I purchased. The helmet is solid! It’s a one size fits all so I’m not sure what to say about that. I do know that out of the box it fits me perfectly; a little tight but I prefer it that way. I really like the added safety light in the back of the helmet. Lights really well for when I leave work at midnight. Not sure how to change the battery, when needed, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes. I guess my only gripe is that rain visor on the front of the helmet; it comes off easily but that is actually my fault because I store it in my old backpack that is secured to the rear basket which is probably a little bit too tight for my helmet. But, at work I have to store it or everyone will play with the helmet and light. This is definitely a 5-star product!!! Well constructed; great added safety feature with the rear helmet light; solid straps; comfortable!”

– Customer Review

Finally, I feel that it offers a good level of safety & I’m going to dispose of our old helmets. It is lightweight & has ventilation. This new helmet is SO much nicer than the old helmets!”

Customer Reviews

“I few months back after purchase I took a spill on my bike going about 20mph and this helmet definitely did its job in protecting my head. The impact caused some minor scuffing and scraping on the side of the helmet, but the integrity of the helmet remained fully intact. Despite the visible signs of the crash, I’m still very impressed with the quality and durability of this helmet. The outer shell is tough and the padding inside provided excellent shock absorption, preventing any injuries. I’m confident that if I had not been wearing this helmet, the outcome would have been much worse. The fit is also great – it’s comfortable and secure without being overly tight. And for the reasonable price, you really can’t beat the protection and performance of the Retrospec Dakota. While the surface damage is a bit unsightly, I’m still very satisfied with this helmet and plan to continue using it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, high-quality helmet for biking, skateboarding, or other action sports. It may have saved me from a serious head injury, seriously.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Helmets for E Bikes

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best helmets for e-bikes, we focus on a few key areas. First and foremost is safety certification; ensuring the helmet meets or exceeds industry standards like CPSC is non-negotiable. We then look at visibility features, especially important for e-bikes that travel faster and often in mixed traffic. Enhanced visibility can come from bright colors, reflective elements, or integrated lights. Comfort is also crucial; an uncomfortable helmet won’t be worn, so we prioritize good ventilation, a secure and adjustable fit system, and lightweight materials. Finally, durability matters – an e-bike helmet should withstand regular use and provide reliable protection over time.

Budget Planning

Helmets for e-bikes come in a wide range of prices. You can find excellent, safe options like the Schwinn Thrasher for under $50, making them highly accessible. Mid-range helmets, such as the Retrospec options, typically fall between $50 and $100, offering more advanced features like integrated lights and superior ventilation. While higher-end helmets can exceed $150, they often include premium materials, more sophisticated safety technologies, and specialized designs for specific riding styles. For most e-bike riders, a budget of $50-$100 will provide a fantastic helmet that balances safety, comfort, and features.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right helmet for your e-bike is a personal decision based on your riding habits, budget, and preferences. Our top picks, like the Retrospec Lennon and Dakota, offer a great balance of features, safety, and comfort. Remember that the best helmet is the one you’ll actually wear, so prioritize a comfortable fit and features that enhance your riding experience. Always ensure your helmet is properly fitted and adjusted for maximum protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a special helmet for an e-bike?

A: While many standard bike helmets are suitable for e-bikes, it’s wise to look for helmets with enhanced safety features due to the higher speeds e-bikes can achieve. Features like integrated lights, better ventilation, and robust construction are particularly beneficial. Always ensure the helmet meets CPSC safety standards.

Q: How should an e-bike helmet fit?

A: A properly fitting helmet should sit level on your head, covering your forehead. It should feel snug but not uncomfortably tight. Use the adjustment dial at the back to fine-tune the fit. The straps should form a ‘V’ shape just below your earlobes, and you should only be able to fit one or two fingers between the chin strap and your chin.

Q: What does MIPS mean in helmets?

A: MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is a safety technology designed to reduce rotational forces on the brain during angled impacts. Many modern helmets include MIPS, which can offer an additional layer of protection, especially relevant for the higher speeds associated with e-bikes.

Q: How often should I replace my e-bike helmet?

A: It’s recommended to replace your helmet every 3-5 years, even if it hasn’t been in an accident, as materials can degrade over time due to UV exposure and general wear. If your helmet has been involved in a crash or sustains any visible damage (cracks, dents), it should be replaced immediately, as its protective capabilities will be compromised.

Q: Are helmets with lights better for e-bikes?

A: Yes, helmets with integrated lights, especially rear-facing lights, significantly improve your visibility to other road users. This is crucial for e-bikes, which can travel at speeds comparable to cars, and often ride in conditions where visibility can be challenging. The Retrospec Lennon is a great example of a helmet with excellent integrated lighting.

Investing in a quality helmet is one of the most important decisions you can make as an e-bike rider. It’s your primary line of defense against head injuries, and with the options available today, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or style for safety. We encourage you to explore the helmets we’ve reviewed and find the one that best suits your needs. Ride safe and enjoy the journey!
