Customer Reviews

“Great bikes, I purchased two for riding with my girlfriend in Colorado. You just have to be a little handy when assembling. The fender brackets were a little tweaked from transport, so I bent them back in position using some tools any handyman would have. Other than that, they are well made and I’m glad I purchased them. Like that they can easily fold and transport in a compact car with gasoline prices as high as they are. Good luck, I would say give it shot, it beats buying a$500.00 bike at local bike shops.” – Happy Rider

“I haven’t bought a petal bike in a long time. I am originally from NY but moved to cocoa beach FL and the big thing here is to ride a bike. I live in an apartment with not a ton of room, and the rain here has salt water in it so it can ruin your bike quickly. I also drive a small sedan, so the whole folding mechanic is super nice to have. It’s a great bike to ride through town but long distance and hills definitely not. I like the little rack thing in the back because i can put a tall boy white claw or my mini speaker in it. The style is retro and cool. Awesome bike!” – Beach Commuter

Customer Reviews

“I bought it because I thought it looked good. I didn’t expect the quality to be so good as well. The riding experience is very smooth and the brakes are sensitive. I often ride to a coffee shop to read and rest on weekends, or ride to a park a little further away for some appropriate cycling exercise. The experience is really great. I will do some diy decoration on it to make it look more unique and nice. It’s a very nice purchase.” – Satisfied Buyer

Customer Reviews

“I wanted to update my review, since I’ve now had my Loop for over a year. This is a fantastic, tough little bike. I live in Boston and was able to ride it through most of the winter. It has issues with slipping on ice which is a matter of physics and not the bike’s fault. Over the last month it stopped shifting gears. I got a YouTube video showing how to fix it, but we didn’t even need to go through the whole video – the cable had popped out of its housing and that was the whole problem. My fiance got it back where it was supposed to go, we did a little bit of tuning, and now its humming along like new. I didn’t bother changing the saddle, as I was afraid a bigger saddle would affect the folding. At first, the saddle was murder, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I wouldn’t go for a really long ride on it, but for short trips around it’s perfect. I don’t use the bag it came in and I wouldn’t be able to carry it around in its bag as it’s too heavy for me. However, it’s perfect for folding up in my trunk. I can also bring it into my office and stick it under my desk if I need to. One issue I have is the rack. It’s too thick to hold most bike panniers or saddle bags. I found a good bag that sits on top and velcros to the rack, but I’d like a pannier that I could just pop on. Instead, I have to really lash my pannier to the bike, which is a pain. Original review: I ordered this bike to get from my car to my office. I had to start parking further away, so what had been a 12 minute walk became a 20 minute walk. This bike, folded up, fits perfectly in the trunk of my teeny Scion. It takes up almost the whole trunk, but that hasn’t been a problem. I’ve had the bike for about a week, and I’ve gotten VERY good at folding and unfolding – I can put it together or take it apart in about 10 seconds without rushing. The bike itself rides very nicely. The saddle is indeed uncomfortable, as people have mentioned, but if you replaced it with a bigger, more comfortable saddle then the bike wouldn’t fold up as compactly. I might get a softer saddle for longer, leisurely bike rides, but for my quick ride from the car to the office it’s perfectly fine. The gears change very smoothly. The bike feels extremely solid. If I wanted to keep it at my desk instead of outside at a bike rack, I easily could as the photo makes clear. I’m tempted to buy another one for my fiance and maybe my son if they want one!” – Boston Commuter

“My LOOP came extremely well packed and secure. It is a gorgeous bike. I have not seen anything sub par about its construction. I was nervous due to the negative reviews. The manual was easy to follow and practice made folding and unfolding easier! The tires need inflating but that is pretty standard for bikes that are shipped . The weight of the bike seems heavier but it is indeed a sturdy bike not flimsy. The brakes seem tight so I’m going to have the bike adjusted professionally at a bike shop before I actually use it. My friend who bought a $2500 Electric bike had to do the same. I am feeling hopeful and optimistic that this will be a great bike for me. I’m short, 5’1 and of a medium weight and fairly active but being older I researched foldable bikes and due to being short I felt the loop was a great choice for me. I will review this bike again after it’s adjusted and I have used it. I’m keeping the box just in case it needs to be returned. So far it looks like a quality bike and I don’t really see any signs of sloppy workmanship. I will do a follow up review . 4 stars right now until I use it. May 16, 2024 Brought it to a bike shop as the brakes looked like they needed adjusting. Will be spending $90 to have the brakes and speeds adjusted as those are needed. I’m not handy with that stuff and have no idea how to do it but decided it was necessary to have a safe ride. Be aware that this may need to be done if you buy this bike. Will be updating when I finally ride it! May 27, 2024 update – after a $90 level 1 tune up it works great! Very happy with it. I have no reservations about the quality. I really love it. One very annoying thing about this Bike purchase is the fluctuation of price on the various colors on Amazon, you have to watch carefully and buy it at its lowest listed price on Amazon. I paid $412 then saw my white bike for $351 on Amazon now it’s up to $451. Now 6/7/24 absolutely love my loop!!! Important to: watch for the best price on Amazon as the price fluctuates Also before use have it adjusted by a bike shop or someone knowledgeable about bikes THIS BIKE IS SO EASY TO FOLD AND UNFOLD AND IS NOT TOO HEAVY! I’m very happy with it and glad I took a chance on it AUGUST 2024- had to come back and write how happy I am that I bought this bike! It is always in the back of my SUV ready to go! Unfolds in minutes and folds back up in minutes! I absolutely love it” – Short and Sweet Rider

Customer Reviews

“OMG this bike is changing my life. Lol. – Easy but lots of steps to assemble it. Very forgiving if you put something on wrong, easy to take it off and correct it. There are videos to! Took me 1.5-2 hrs to assemble it. – It is solid! Very good quality! It’s super quiet too. *If you have hardwood floors, for goodness sake, get a rug! Otherwise it’s just an ER trip waiting to happen! When I went to adjust it on my hardwood floor, it practically slipped out from under me and so did both of my feet. Lol. I actually got a nice 5×3 ft rug from Walmart for like $12. – I have a tiny studio apt and thought I could never get any exercise equipment because I don’t have room. Well, let me tell you! When I’m done, I fold it and put in the corner and takes up very little space. It doesn’t look ugly either. – I love that I can put my phone or my tablet on the little shelf! – The computer readout is really big, so if you have trouble with your eyesight this is perfect! – I love that if I put my hands on the handles it will tell me what my heart rate is! – My favorite part is being able to adjust the bike. When my back is hurting I can still get my exercise in by adjusting it to a recumbent bike where you sit back against the backrest and it’s a little bit lower. When my back is just fine I can adjust it to a regular sit up bike. – The arm resistance bands are no joke! I get a really good workout while I’m riding the bike by doing curls and exercises to work every area of muscle on my arms and shoulders. Sorry I don’t know the names of the arm exercises I do. I kind of have to be careful because sometimes I get sore. Lol. *I’ve had it for 3 months now. I’ve increased my time on it steadily. It is still just as solid as it was when I put it together!” – Life Changer

“Love this especially if it’s super hot outside great quality easy to assemble and if you don’t have a lot of space this is perfect it’s foldable great quality and durable! I would love to sponsor for them! Aw it has adjustable settings as well! Great for beginners and easy on your knees” – Fitness Enthusiast

Complete Buying Guide for Best Folding Bikes For Commuting

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best folding bikes for commuting, we look at several key features. First and foremost is the folding mechanism itself – it needs to be quick, intuitive, and secure. Portability is crucial, so we assess the bike’s folded size and weight. Ride quality is also paramount; a commuter bike should be comfortable for daily use, offering smooth gear changes (if applicable) and effective braking. Durability is non-negotiable, meaning we favor bikes with sturdy frames and reliable components that can withstand the rigors of daily use. Finally, value for money plays a big role, ensuring you get a quality product without an exorbitant price tag. For those who need to carry gear, we also consider integrated accessories like rear baskets or racks.

Budget Planning

Folding bikes for commuting can range significantly in price. Entry-level models might start around $200-$300, offering basic functionality and portability. Mid-range options, typically between $400-$700, provide better components, more gears, and improved build quality. High-end folding bikes can go upwards of $1,000, featuring lightweight materials, advanced folding mechanisms, and premium performance features. For most commuters, a budget of $400-$600 often yields the best balance of features, durability, and affordability. Remember to factor in potential costs for accessories like lights, locks, and perhaps a better seatpost for enhanced comfort, similar to what you might consider for road bikes for commuting.

Final Thoughts

Selecting the right folding bike for your commute is about finding the perfect fit for your needs, budget, and lifestyle. Whether you prioritize ultra-portability, ruggedness for varied terrains, or a smooth, comfortable ride, there’s a folding bike out there for you. By considering the factors outlined above, you can make an informed decision that will make your daily commute more enjoyable and efficient. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the average weight of a folding bike?

A: Most folding bikes weigh between 20 to 35 pounds (9 to 16 kg). Lighter models often use aluminum or carbon fiber frames, while heavier ones might be steel-framed or include additional features like suspension.

Q: How compact do folding bikes get?

A: Folded dimensions vary greatly. Some fold into a very compact package that can fit under a desk or in a small storage closet, while others are larger but still significantly smaller than a standard bike. It’s always best to check the specific folded dimensions listed by the manufacturer.

Q: Can folding bikes handle hills?

A: Yes, many folding bikes are equipped with multiple gears, allowing them to tackle hills effectively. Bikes with 7-speed or higher gearing will perform better on inclines. However, the smaller wheels on some folding bikes can make climbing feel more challenging than on a larger-wheeled bike.

Q: Are folding bikes durable enough for daily commuting?

A: Absolutely. Reputable folding bikes are built to withstand daily use. They often feature robust frames and reliable components. However, like any bike, they require regular maintenance to ensure longevity and safety.

Q: What kind of maintenance do folding bikes require?

A: Folding bikes require similar maintenance to standard bicycles: keeping tires inflated, lubricating the chain, checking brake pads, and ensuring bolts are tight. Pay special attention to the hinges and folding mechanisms, keeping them clean and perhaps lightly oiled for smooth operation. A good folding bike pump is also a must-have accessory.

In conclusion, the world of folding bikes for commuting offers a fantastic solution for urban dwellers seeking convenience, efficiency, and a touch of adventure. Each of the bikes we’ve reviewed has its unique strengths, whether it’s ruggedness, portability, or value. We encourage you to weigh these factors against your personal commuting needs.
