Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Giving it 5 stars because it’s 100% functional, feels rock solid, my bike doesn’t move at all over bumps, on the highway etc. And it’s so cheap that no other bike rack comes close to the value you get with this. The only thing I don’t like about it, is the nylon straps are very low quality, I’m sure they will degrade quickly, especially if you get caught in the weather often. However, with the way it’s designed, it would be very easy to replace the straps with better ones if/when that time comes.Other than that, it’s very easy to use, folds up compact and takes up very little space in my trunk. It’s lightweight and easy to mount by yourself. The straps are plenty long enough for any car. The instructions are very clear and give you different options for mounting depending on how your car is built.”

Customer Review: “This is a very strong excellent bike rack well made without cutting any corners on the quality of the materials. It is a design that has been a standard for fifty years. Thousands are in use. ELECTRIC BIKES ARE HEAVIER, SO CAREFULLY OBSERVE THE WEIGHT SPECIFICATION FOR THE 2, 3 OR 4 BIKE CARRIERS. It can easily be put on & removed from almost any car, unlike racks that need to be attached to a trailer mount. This is my second rack from “Allen” after forty years I retired the first one due to old age. It was still so stable that I could jerk the bike rack and shake the car!!! This bike rack is the classic design and exceptionally well built …. BUY THIS RACK”

Bike feels safe and secure. I notice no rattling or noise while driving. I have a rear dash cam that I can see the bike perfectly and there is almost no wiggling or wobbling, even at freeway speed. Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I’m really impressed with the quality and design of this bike rack. The alloy steel frame feels extremely solid, and the added security features like the base lock and integrated steel cable lock give me peace of mind when leaving the bikes on the rack. It feels very stable once installed. One feature I really appreciate is the foldable and tilting design. When I’m not using it, I can easily fold it up to save space, and the tilt function makes it simple to access the trunk without removing the rack. That’s a huge convenience during road trips. The 165 lb load capacity is great for carrying multiple bikes. I’ve used it with two bikes so far and it handled them with no problem, and it seems capable of holding even more depending on the size and weight.Installation was also very straightforward since it comes mostly pre-assembled. I just had to tighten a few screws and attach it to my 2 inch hitch receiver, and it was ready to go. The hook pin also helps reduce wobbling, which keeps everything steady while driving.Overall, this is a well built, secure, and easy to use bike rack that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys biking trips or outdoor adventures.”

Customer Review: “The media could not be loaded. For the most part, this is built really well and works well but there were a couple of misses. For one, the upper carriage bolts don’t fit flush into the tubes. This could be easily corrected by drilling out the holes on the inner bracket a little bit so that the square end will clear it and the bolt head will sit flush. It’s a bit of an anal detail but that’s me. I did get a third bike on this, not the one I put in the back of the truck, but another one. I attached two pictures to show this. It defiantly fits 3 bikes well. To get 4 full sized bikes on here I feel like might be a bit of a challenge. The handle bars stick out so far! I used (from back to front) slots 1,2,4 and that worked really well. I did haul my bikes about 15 miles to a bike trail with speeds up to 60mph with no issues or concerns. this really is quite solid. This is so well built but with the one bike I couldn’t get on here, I’m really torn. I think I would go 3.5 stars if I could. I think it’s not quite 4 stars but I feel like 3 is too harsh. I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt. There is a lot more I do like about this than I don’t. Watch my video for full details.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I bought the bones two bike trunk rack for my 2025 Caddy CT4. Fit like a glove, solid on the trunk, good quality plastic, quality straps, and never worry about my bike falling off. Had a problem with one strap not wanting to let go. Contacted customer service and within a week I had a new arm delivered. The strap cannot be changed out because is is sealed at the factory. Excellent customer service. Highly recommended.”

Customer Review: “This bike rack was relatively easy to put together. It feels fairly sturdy, although with only one base arm on the top of the trunk (tripod stability), I did notice with my first use that the rack did shift slightly when driving extensive distances. For some reason, the clasp part of the anchor straps on one side of the rack were practically inside the frame; and on the other side, they were about 4″-6″ away from the frame, which made it much easier to adjust the straps on one side of the rack versus the other.Main complaint about this rack: as it is designed to have the lower arms sit on the bumper, not the back wall of the trunk lid, it makes it a challenge to open the trunk, because you must line everything up just-so in order to close the trunk. I used it for long-distance bike hauling, which meant when I wanted to get something out of the trunk, I had to readjust the rack every time I needed to open the trunk, making sure the feet lined up so they would not get in the way of closing the trunk, and that all the straps were still in place. As I was on the road for four days, and did not want to leave my bike unattended on my car overnight (despite security strap into trunk), I had to open my trunk each night to put the security strap anchor back inside the trunk, so this was not something to not fret about. (Also, historically, I have simply left my bike rack on my car for long periods of time, and this trunk open/close issue means I’ll only keep the rack on the car when I actually need it.)On this rack, as with previous bike racks I’ve owned, I do wish there was a bit of rubber on the clasps to help make the straps feel more secure once everything is tightened up. Minor complaint.Ease of use once assembled/in place: feel like it is pretty easy to get bikes onto this rack. Second bike was a little bit of a challenge to get it on, but I think that was more due to how the frames of the two bikes aligned more than a flaw of the rack design. I do wish the strap on the lower part of the rack, meant to secure the vertical bar of the bike frame, was perhaps two inches longer. There are holes at the end of the straps that you can loop a lock through (or a thin cable wire lock). They’re more theft-deterrent than theft-preventative, as they’re plastic, so a determined bike thief could cut through them, I think.Overall, compared to my previous rack, I like this one quite a bit. Feels sturdy. Straps drive me a bit nuts, but honestly, I have yet to have a bike rack where the straps aren’t aggravating in one form or another. Easy to remove rack from car.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Bike Racks For Cars

Essential Factors We Consider

When picking out the best bike racks for cars, we looked at a few key things. First off, how easy is it to install and use? Nobody wants to spend ages fiddling with straps or bolts. Then, we considered how secure the rack is – we need to know our bikes are safe and sound, even on bumpy roads. Vehicle compatibility is huge, too; we checked if they fit a range of cars, from sedans to SUVs. Lastly, we thought about durability and the overall value for money. We want a rack that’s built to last without costing an arm and a leg.

Budget Planning

Bike racks come in a pretty wide price range. Basic trunk racks, like some of the Allen Sports models, are super budget-friendly, usually under $100. Hitch-mounted racks, especially those designed for heavier bikes like e-bikes or fat-tire bikes, tend to be more expensive, often ranging from $150 to $300 or more. Consider what type of bikes you have and how often you’ll use the rack when deciding on your budget. For occasional use with lighter bikes, a trunk rack might be perfect. For frequent trips with heavier bikes, investing in a hitch rack is often worth it.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right bike rack really depends on your specific needs. If you have a car without a hitch and need something affordable for one or two standard bikes, a trunk rack like the Allen Sports models is a fantastic starting point. For those with a 2-inch hitch receiver and the need to carry heavier or multiple bikes, hitch racks like the TANX or the 4-bike option offer more capacity and convenience. And if you value iconic design and robust build quality, the Saris Bones is a classic for a reason. No matter your choice, ensuring a secure fit and reliable transport will let you focus on enjoying your rides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What type of bike rack is best for my car?

A: The best type of bike rack for your car depends on your vehicle’s features (like a hitch receiver) and the type of bikes you have. Trunk racks are versatile but can affect trunk access and may not fit all cars perfectly. Hitch racks are generally sturdier and easier to load, especially for heavier bikes, but require a hitch receiver. Roof racks are another option, keeping your view clear but requiring lifting bikes overhead.

Q: How many bikes can a car bike rack hold?

A: Bike racks vary in capacity, typically holding anywhere from 1 to 4 bikes. Trunk racks usually carry 1-3 bikes, while hitch racks can often accommodate 2-4 bikes. Some heavy-duty hitch racks might even hold more, but always check the rack’s weight capacity and your vehicle’s towing/carrying limits.

Q: Is it safe to use a bike rack on my car?

A: Yes, it is safe to use a bike rack as long as it is properly installed and the bikes are secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly check straps, clamps, and connections for wear or looseness. Always be mindful of the added length and weight your car now has, especially when parking or maneuvering.

Q: Can I use a bike rack with an electric bike (e-bike)?

A: Yes, but you need to be careful. E-bikes are significantly heavier than traditional bikes. Ensure the bike rack you choose has a high weight capacity (often 160 lbs or more for hitch racks) and is designed to handle the extra weight. Hitch racks are generally recommended for e-bikes due to their strength and ease of loading.

Finding the perfect bike rack can make a huge difference in your cycling adventures.
