Customer Reviews

“For reference: I have a 23 inch large noggin. Kind of “long headed” with low ears. This helmet in “Large” fits me well, with a little slack on the sides/temples (long headed), with the rear adjuster just barely tightened down a click or two. The strap’s “ear V” can be adjusted up/down, forward/back at the bottom of the “V” so it does not intrude on your ear. The chin strap is padded near the buckle and the magnetic pull thingy works really well, very/quick easy to get off. It does have an elastic “tie-down” on the back for your goggles, wads of money, band-aids, clean underwear, or whatever use you can find for that. Perhaps a little sign that says, “If you can read this, BACK OFF!” The visor is ~twice as long as most I’ve seen, so it might actually serve a purpose unlike the tiny 1 inch Donald Duck bills on most of them. It attaches with two hand screws on either side and a snap-in peg at the center. The front vents have a “bug net” built into them, a nice “premium” touch. You can see it in my pics if you’re looking for it. I went to WallyWorld and looked at helmets by Ozark Trail, Schwinn, Bell, and Mongoose, ranging from $19-$49 and every one of them was worse than this helmet as far as fit and the padding inside. They had tiny, thin little strips of pad held in by flimsy, barely usable velcro tape spheres. This Favoto helmet has decent, wide pads that go all the way around to the back, sides, and even on the adjuster at the rear. I have not seen a higher end $100+ helmet to compare to, but for the price this one seems quite good. Also, I believe all the MIPS stuff is snake oil, marketing nonsense that only “tests better” due to the fact they strap the helmets on to dummys SO tightly they have no ability to shift/rotate so that the MIPS shell comes into play. In reality, your helmet can shift/rotate a bit without MIPS just fine (unless you’re bolting it to your skull), and when tested that way, MIPS does Jack + Squat. All it does is raise your helmet that much more off your head, making you look even more like a window licking mushroom head. I really can’t think of anything to complain about. One of the straps was a bit twisted up in the ear buckle area and I had to fiddle with it for a minute? After I go ride off a 40 foot cliff, or slam myself into a tree, I’ll come back and edit-report about how well it performed…or not. If I don’t edit soon, don’t assume it failed, and that I am leaking grey matter at the bottom of a canyon. I may have just not found an “opportunity” to crash yet…and we don’t have canyons in Michigan. >:0) EDIT: Went for a few rides with it on now and comfort is good. I more or less forgot it was on. No crashes to report…yet.” – Amazon Customer

“This is a great helmet! It’s adjustable and very comfortable. I have used it many times while riding my mountain bike. I love the color and the price was reasonable.” – Amazon Customer

Complete Buying Guide for Best Bike Helmet Mtb

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best bike helmet MTB, we look at several key factors to ensure you get the most protection and comfort. First and foremost is safety certification; we prioritize helmets that meet or exceed industry standards like CPSC. Ventilation is also critical; good airflow prevents overheating, especially on challenging climbs. We also consider the fit system, ensuring it’s adjustable and provides a secure, comfortable feel. Finally, weight and durability play a significant role – a lighter helmet is more comfortable, and a durable one will last longer.

Budget Planning

The price of a bike helmet MTB can vary widely. While premium helmets can cost over $200, you can find excellent, safe options for much less. Our budget picks demonstrate that great protection and comfort are achievable without breaking the bank. Generally, expect to spend between $50-$100 for a high-quality, reliable mountain bike helmet. For those on a tighter budget, models under $50 can still offer adequate protection for casual riding, but always verify their safety certifications.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right bike helmet MTB is a personal decision based on your riding style, budget, and specific needs. We’ve highlighted some of the best options available, ranging from top-tier choices to budget-friendly alternatives. Remember, the most important factor is that the helmet fits you well and that you wear it every time you ride. Always prioritize safety and comfort when making your selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the most important feature in an MTB helmet?

A: The most important feature is safety certification, ensuring the helmet is designed to protect your head in an impact. Beyond that, a secure and comfortable fit, along with good ventilation, are crucial for enjoyable and safe riding.

Q: How do I know if an MTB helmet fits correctly?

A: A properly fitting helmet should sit level on your head, covering your forehead. It should feel snug but not tight, with no excessive wobbling when you shake your head. The straps should form a ‘V’ shape around your ears, and the chin strap should be snug enough that you can only fit one or two fingers between it and your chin.

Q: Do I need a helmet with MIPS technology?

A: MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is designed to reduce rotational forces during angled impacts. While it adds an extra layer of protection, many non-MIPS helmets also offer excellent safety. The decision often comes down to budget and personal preference, but it’s a valuable feature to consider.

Q: How often should I replace my MTB helmet?

A: It’s recommended to replace your helmet every 3-5 years, even if it hasn’t been in an accident. Over time, materials can degrade due to UV exposure and general wear. Of course, if your helmet has been involved in a crash, it should be replaced immediately, as its protective capabilities may be compromised.

Q: Can I use a road bike helmet for mountain biking?

A: While a road bike helmet offers protection, it’s generally not ideal for mountain biking. MTB helmets typically offer more coverage, especially at the back and sides of the head, and often come with visors to protect from sun and debris. They also tend to have more robust ventilation for trail riding conditions.

Finding the best bike helmet MTB is essential for any serious rider. Whether you’re tackling challenging downhills or cruising through singletrack, your helmet is your most critical piece of safety gear. We hope this guide and our reviews help you make an informed decision. Remember to always prioritize safety, fit, and comfort. Happy trails!
