Customer Reviews
“Let me start off by saying that I’ve been roaming through various models of different brands, and snowballing through all the reviews ultimately choosing this brain bucket. And there’s a few here that complain about the Virginia Tech 2 star safety rating. Let me say this, I see no discernable evidence to suggest that outside of an extreme discipline of riding, a helmet makes any difference in ones safety. On the contrary, there IS evidence that points to riders being more prone to risk taking with a helmet on rather than off. So the two star rating, outside of taking a rock to the head or flying over the handlebars at Mach Jesus is a moot point and this brain bucket will and does provide ample protection for 99.99999% of spills. Having said that, my 1 year old and I have recently started riding around The neighborhood and local bike paths on my daily rider with the little Thule Yepp shotgun seat. I have a rather stylish Giro Scamp for her enormous noggin so as any good parent should, I wear mine to set the example. On to the helmet. I have a long face with a big forehead, but the circumference of my dome measures at a whopping 55 1/2cm and every helmet I ever tried sits so high on my head leaving me looking like a proper dweeb. If I’m going to eat it, then I’ll do so in style. I know it shouldn’t matter, but alas, it do. The Giro Fixture 2 sits nice and low around my ears covering the back of my head entirely and the adjustment dial in the back provides a good range to make it snug, and comfortably I might add, it is super lightweight, remarkably comfortable (though a cushion for the chin strap would be a welcome addition), and it channels air through the vents efficiently keeping me and my receding hairline nearly sweat free. The clasps are easily adjusted and it boasts a lovely aerodynamic profile that on a solo ride, I forget that it’s on, even after a few hours in. As far as shading goes, I wear sunglasses every single day ride, but it does help provide some coverage. Other reviewers have posted the damages sustained on a spill and I have confidence that In My commutes, what brain cells I have left are in good hands. In other words. This is a solid all arounder that’s good enough for who it’s for, and I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.”

“Took a chance on this helmet during Black Friday, and bought it for my girlfriend. It’s not an exact match, but she has a teal bike and I didn’t want to get her a black, white, or pink helmet. We both just got bikes, and I assembled and tuned them while she was out of town; I wanted to surprise her with the bike being finished, some upgrades, and helmets so we could get riding right way. I wasn’t sure if she’d like the color, but she loves it. In fact, she loves the helmet. She says it’s light but feels high quality, and she feels safe and confident riding on the road while wearing it. She really likes the blue color, and how easy it is to dial in the fit. Plus, it’s designed to work well and be comfortable with a ponytail, so she likes that as well. The chin strap is easy to adjust, and now that she has it set how she likes it she barely notices the helmet when it’s on. I explained MIPS to her as I’m familiar because of motorcycle helmets, and she likes that safety feature a lot. Finally, she loves that it has a visor, and says it’s placed perfectly to block out the sun but not affect visibility.”

Essential Factors We Consider
When we look for the best mountain bike helmets, we focus on a few key areas. First and foremost is safety – does it meet or exceed safety standards like CPSC? Comfort is huge; a helmet that fits well and has good ventilation will make you want to wear it on every ride. Adjustability is also critical, as a helmet that can be easily fine-tuned to your head shape ensures a secure and comfortable fit. Finally, durability and build quality are important so your helmet lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is MIPS and why is it important for mountain bike helmets?
A: MIPS stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. It’s a low-friction layer inside the helmet designed to reduce rotational forces on the brain during angled impacts, which are common in cycling accidents. Many riders consider MIPS a crucial safety feature for mountain biking.
Q: How should a mountain bike helmet fit?
A: A mountain bike helmet should fit snugly and sit level on your head, covering your forehead. It shouldn’t rock forward or backward, and the straps should form a “V” shape just below your ears. The chin strap should be tight enough that you can only fit one or two fingers between the strap and your chin.
Q: Do I need a helmet with a visor for mountain biking?
A: While not strictly mandatory, a visor is highly recommended for mountain biking. It helps shield your eyes from the sun, rain, and trail debris like branches and mud, improving visibility and comfort.
Q: How often should I replace my mountain bike helmet?
A: It’s generally recommended to replace your mountain bike helmet every 3-5 years, even if it hasn’t been in a crash. Over time, the materials can degrade due to sweat, UV exposure, and general wear and tear. Of course, if your helmet has been in a significant impact, it should be replaced immediately.
