Customer Reviews

“Pretty nice helmet overall. Fit as size chart had stated. Solid build. Very lightweight. Comfortable. Nice ventilation. It also just has a nice look to it. I believe it had a 3-star rating from the Virginia Tech Helmet Testing Labs, so I mean, it’s not horrible or super great apparently. Hopefully, you won’t ever need to find out how protective the helmet is, but it feels like it’d hold together quite nicely. Straps are easily adjustable, and it’s nice having the dial on the back to get that exact fit you want.”

– John D.

“Nice helmet. A little expensive and would not have spent the extra money if I could have gotten the size needed elsewhere. Overall happy with purchase. Nice fit. Good looking helmet. Easy to use buckle. Adjusts to fit securely.”

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Excellent safety features (MIPS & Koroyd)
  • Great ventilation keeps you cool
  • Comfortable and secure adjustable fit
  • Sleek design
Cons:
  • Can have a slight “mushroom effect” for some head shapes
  • No specific slots for sunglasses storage

Customer Reviews

“First is comfort. This is a rather heavy lid and with the suspension system and padding, you really don’t know it’s on your head. Ventilation is very good. It’s a great looking lid, however, it does have a bit of the mushroom effect. It has MIPs, so for safety and functionality, I would rate it very good for this price point. The helmet is adjustable, so fit and comfort are equal to helmets twice the price. The helmet has a nice gloss finish. Would I recommend this helmet? ABSOLUTELY. The only cons are the mushroom effect, which is not too bad, upside to that is your head is covered. And sunglasses have no holes for them. But for the price, I can see many miles with this Black beauty.”

– Michael R.

“This is my first “higher end” helmet. Normally I was buying a cheaper Bell option from a big box store, but with all the new tech in helmet safety, I figured I’d splurge a little and picked up this Smith helmet. The fit is excellent, between the dial and straps, I was able to dial it in nicely. The MIPS system takes a second to get used to if you’ve never had it before; it’s allowed to move a little back and forth, but you don’t notice it while you’re wearing it. Just something to be aware of when adjusting the fitment. I took it out for the first ride yesterday and the ventilation was good, no complaints on fitment or anything of that nature. After a minute or two, I forgot I had it on. It’s very lightweight. Overall, a great helmet.”

Customer Reviews

“Well, I purchased my first ever electric scooter (at 74) that has a seat and rear basket from Amazon and in the product manual it states to use safety gear. Well, I only travel 1/2 mile round trips to work so I ignored that warning; the result was I took a hard fall and bruised my ribs; banged my knee; scraped my elbow and yes, banged my head on the sidewalk. That was a hard lesson learned !!! So this was one of the safety items I purchased. The helmet is solid! It’s a one size fits all so I’m not sure what to say about that. I do know that out of the box it fits me perfectly; a little tight but I prefer it that way. I really like the added safety light in the back of the helmet. Lights really well for when I leave work at midnight. Not sure how to change the battery, when needed, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes. I guess my only gripe is that rain visor on the front of the helmet; it comes off easily but that is actually my fault because I store it in my old backpack that is secured to the rear basket which is probably a little bit too tight for my helmet. But, at work I have to store it or everyone will play with the helmet and light. This is definitely a 5-star product!!! Well constructed; great added safety feature with the rear helmet light; solid straps; comfortable!”

– George T.

“This is a good helmet! It’s comfortable & easy to use, fit, & adjust. I love that it has a light for being seen. It’s a nice color & a reasonable price. Finally, I feel that it offers a good level of safety & I’m going to dispose of our old helmets. It is lightweight & has ventilation. This new helmet is SO much nicer than the old helmets!”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Street Bike Helmets

Essential Factors We Consider

When looking for the best street bike helmets, we prioritize safety certifications like CPSC, Snell, or ECE. Beyond that, impact absorption technology such as MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is a huge plus. We also evaluate ventilation systems to ensure comfort on longer rides, fit adjustability for a secure feel, and overall durability. Weight and aesthetics are considered, but never at the expense of protection.

Budget Planning

Street bike helmets range from under $50 to over $300. For around $50-$100, you can find good quality helmets with essential safety features and decent ventilation, like the budget-friendly options we’ve reviewed. Investing between $100-$200 often gets you advanced technologies like MIPS, improved aerodynamics, and premium comfort features. High-end helmets, typically over $200, offer the latest innovations in safety, materials, and performance.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the best street bike helmet for you depends on your specific needs, riding style, and budget. Always prioritize safety certifications and a proper fit. Don’t hesitate to try on different models if possible. Remember, a helmet is an investment in your well-being, so choosing wisely is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is MIPS and why is it important for a street bike helmet?

A: MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It’s a low-friction layer inside the helmet designed to reduce rotational forces on the brain during angled impacts. This is crucial for street riding where angled falls are common, potentially leading to more severe brain injuries.

Q: How do I know if a helmet fits correctly?

A: A properly fitting helmet should sit level on your head, covering your forehead. It should feel snug but not uncomfortably tight. You should be able to slide one finger between the strap and your chin. When you shake your head side to side, the helmet should stay in place without moving excessively.

Q: How often should I replace my street bike helmet?

A: It’s recommended to replace your helmet every 3-5 years, even if it hasn’t been in an accident. Over time, the protective materials can degrade due to sweat, UV exposure, and general wear and tear. Of course, if your helmet has been involved in a crash, it must be replaced immediately, regardless of its age.

Q: Are more vents always better for street bike helmets?

A: While good ventilation is important for comfort, especially in warmer weather or during strenuous riding, more vents aren’t always better. The placement and design of the vents are just as critical as their number. Too many vents can compromise the helmet’s structural integrity. The best helmets balance airflow with protection.

Q: Do I need a special helmet for e-bikes?

A: While many standard bike helmets are suitable for e-bikes, some e-bike models are designed to meet higher safety standards (like CPSC, often with an “e-bike” designation) due to the higher speeds e-bikes can achieve. Always check the helmet’s safety certifications to ensure it meets the requirements for your type of riding and e-bike.

Finding the best street bike helmet is a critical step for any cyclist. The options we’ve reviewed offer a range of features and price points, all prioritizing your safety and comfort.
