Customer Reviews

“I’ve had this scooter for a little over a week, and it’s already exceeding my expectations. It runs smoothly, it’s very quiet, and the combination of size, weight, long‑range battery, and a comfortable seat makes it an excellent fit for my needs. I’ve been disabled for many years and have owned several mobility scooters. I currently have three. One is similar to the Rascal and is my go‑to for indoor use, doctor’s appointments, and shopping. Another is a larger model that I use around the neighborhood and on my lawn. The new Rascal fills the gap perfectly. The Rascal fits in my car, just like my Travel Pro, but the Rascal gets up to 10 miles on a full charge, which is about 4 miles more than the Travel Pro. That extra range makes it ideal for parks, zoos, and any place where I might be out longer. Like most lightweight scooters, neither the Rascal nor the Travel Pro handle thick grass very well, so keep that in mind. I also strongly recommend choosing the 3‑wheel version. The turning radius is much better, and it’s great for navigating tight spaces. I’ve only used 3‑wheel scooters over the years and have never had stability issues. The positive reviews I read before purchasing were spot‑on. My experience so far matches them completely. Buy with confidence and enjoy!”

Customer Reviews

“We love purchasing on Amazon, because the reviews let us know what will meet our needs and work for us. Here is another case in point. We have looked at locally available mobility scooters, and there are many places to purchase scooters here where we live in South Florida. However, this Drive Medical scooter is half the price of the other major brand, and Drive Medical makes high quality, well-made scooters. The Amazon reviews convinced us to go ahead and buy it. My husband wanted a scooter so he could ride down to the shopping mall, which is about half a mile from our home, and the public library is about a mile away. There are sidewalks the whole way. At the highest speed, he is content. The steering is supposed to be less tight on a 4-wheel scooter versus a 3-wheel, but we wouldn\’t need more. The seat is very comfortable, and my husband is heavier. The weight limit is 300 lbs. The basket is larger than other scooters that we looked at. The leg room is ample, even though it looks small, it\’s really great. We kept the red accents, but it comes with a package of blue accents if you prefer that color. We left the garage door open, and the delivery truck put the scooter into the center of the garage. Assembly was easy. The directions and Owner\’s Manual are very well written and easy to understand. You can download the manual to save it electronically (click on the link “Warranty” above the description on Amazon, and you will get the latest Owner\’s Manual version.) So I went to Drive Medical online and tried to register the scooter for the warranty. The problem was that there are several numbers on the stickers on the scooter, and I couldn\’t tell which number was the actual serial number. Clue: the serial number is 12 digits long, it starts with a number, and the second digit is a letter. So, I called Customer Service. The people were very polite and answered right away. They said that I didn\’t need to worry; that Amazon automatically registered the Drive Medical scooter for us at the time of purchase. I asked them to explain the warranty, and they did. The scooter came partially charged, so my husband was able to take a short drive right away. OK, so then we charged it overnight, and my husband took it for a ride. It\’s supposed to go at least 9 miles, but it ran out of battery charge at .4 mile (I measured the distance with the car). We tried charging it for another 24 hours, and the same thing happened – it ran out of battery charge at under 1/2 mile. So I called Customer Service, explained what was happening, what the display lights looked like, etc., and they said they would take care of it. Two days later we received a new charging cord. I called Customer Service, and said, I thought we were supposed to be getting a new battery, and they said, just try it. We charged the scooter overnight with the new charger, and it works fine. I highly recommend this mobility scooter. It is easy to take apart and put in the back of our car, I can do it by myself, and I’m 65. It is silent when running. It is very comfortable. Really great. You can\’t beat this price. The Customer Service is wonderful and responsive.”

– Satisfied Customer

“I got this scooter 3 years and 10 days ago. It’s been in the trunk of whatever car I’m driving since. I’ve had the Lincoln MKZ for two years this week and would not leave the city limits without it. It’s better than a lifeboat and a lot easier to love: there is very little maintenance. About a month ago I got crunched in the MKZ, took out the whole right front quarter. I drove to the collision repair shop and parked the car, opened the trunk and got my scooter out, told the shop boss to call me when the car was ready and headed home. The trail was only about 5 miles and rough in places, but the traffic was okay and the trip seemed short. I wouldn’t trade my scooter for any other. The rest of my review that follows was written about two years ago and still stands today. Easy assembly and can be easily disassembled to take it anywhere. I hauled it in a Town Car for about a year, recently changed to a MKZ. There’s more room in the MKZ. We took it to Oregon last year, rode it over paved trails. The battery lasted as long as I needed it. I am very happy with it and not buying the three wheel version makes me even more happy with it, as there were times I believe the three wheel version would have dumped me. I especially like the double speed controls, as i’m able to smoothly travel very slow or turn the limiting knob and move along faster than my wife can walk if I dare. Especially great for shopping or visiting the VA. Both places have scooters for customers but more customers than scooters. I’m 83, and yes it’s a little heavy, but I have no trouble loading/unloading it. I’m able to walk only very short distances before the pain sets in, so I appreciate the mobility without having to haul it on a trailer.”

Customer Reviews

“I am 76 years young, I have used a mobility scooter since 2005. I have used 3 major brands. This time I purchased the brand that I started with 2005. I have an opinion that th heavy 3 wheel Rascal is the best qsuality scooter I have used. It will give you good service over many years. It turms on a dime. Batteries included are very good. The charger is very efficient and will last for many years. A Rascal is the first cart I had in 2005 and now. It is the best all around scooter of all I have used in the past. I wish I would have stayed with this Brand and this scooter for all the years past. Try it you will like it.”

Customer Reviews

“JUST RECEIVED THE SCOOTER, ASSEMBLY WAS REALLY EASY. THE ONLY PROBLEM THERE ISN’T ANY PLACE IN THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO UNLOCK THE FRONT WHEEL. I PLAYED AROUND WITH IT AWHILE AND THEN PULLED ON IT AND IT SNAPPED INTO AN OUTER POSITION. ME AND THE WIFE LAUGHED OUT HEADS OFF. WHY COULDN’T THEY PUT THAT IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. IT’S KINDA HARD TO PLUG THE AC CONNECTOR INTO THE BATTERY, BUT IT’S NOT THAT HARD. IT STATES IN THE MANUAL THAT YOU MUST CHARGE FOR 6 TO 9 HOURS BEFORE FIRST USE, BUT MY SCOOTER CAME FULLY CHARGED. I RODE IT AROUND THE HOUSE AND IT RIDES NICE. I HAVEN’T TRIED TO LOAD IT IN MY TRUNK YET, SO I’LL LET YOU KNOW HOW THAT WORKED OUT. BYE THE WAY THE SCOOTER COMES WITH A WARRANTY. BATTERY 6 MONTH AND DIFFERENT PARTS DIFFERENT TIMES. I RECOMMEND REGISTERING THE SCOOTER RIGHT AWAY FOR FULL WARRANTY PROTECTION. I’M SURE IT WILL FIT MY NEEDS FOR GOING SHOPPING AND BALL PARKS AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE. I DON’T PLAN ON RIDING IT ON STREETS. Well It doesn’t ride well on our front yard rocks, it only works on a flat surface. I have a Buick Cascada 2016 and i got the scooter in the trunk, but In the fall I’m not going to be able to put the top down with the scooter in it. I had to take it far more apart then 5 pieces just to get it in, had to remove handles from seat, lower seat tube, and remove the basket mounting two screws. That’s why I took a star away. I still believe it will come in handy on trips and if we take the wife’s SUV. I had to go back to 5 stars, this scooter is great, I haven’t been able to go inside Costco for 3 years, and it only took me 10 mins to put it together and 5 mins. to take apart. After we got home we did transfer it into my wife’s SUV, but only because I want to put the top down when it cools off, and we take her SUV on all trips anyway, and if I need it I can just take her car. Anyway I’m more than happy with the way this scooter performs and after an hour of riding around the battery was still fully charged. When we got home, all I needed to bring in the house is the battery pack to keep it charged. I attached pictures, It’s pretty quick, I only had it turned up half was and was buzzing around pretty good, and you can see I’m not a small guy. I did leave the handles off I see no real reason for them, and in Vegas when we rented a scooter i always left the handles up anyway.”

– Happy Customer with a Few Hiccups

“Since receiving this scooter I have been nothing but impressed with it. It has been on two Jetblue flights, taken apart several times to put into the trunk of my Prius (with ease) to attend New York Mets games and spent 10 days in Walt Disney World. While in Disney it never disappointed! I rode it up and down the bus ramps and monorails with ease and it was simple to parallel park into the designated parking area on each bus. We spent each day from park opening to park closing in Walt Disney World, most days “hopping” between 2 or 3 different parks and my battery never had less than 1/4 power remaining (which did not affect it’s power at all). I would charge it overnight and it would be good to go the next morning at “rope drop”! I received several compliments from others on scooters who noticed how nicely it handled. Almost every bus driver stated that they “wished that all scooters maneuvered this easily”. I spent years renting from local vendors in the Orlando area or directly from Disney itself and buying my own was the smartest investment I have ever made. I only wish I had purchased it years sooner! I completely recommend this 3 wheel Drive Medical Scout Compact Travel Scooter. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. UPDATE: Another 4 airline flights & 2 Disney Cruises later and this scooter is still working as well as it did on day one! Have I mentioned how much I LOVE this scooter??? UPDATE (2023) – After 7 years, DOZENS of fights, cruises, baseball games & trips to WDW, I finally needed to replace the battery ($50). It still works as well as it did when it was brand new. Still love this scooter!”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Scooter For Rural Roads

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best scooter for rural roads, we look at several key factors that are crucial for navigating less-than-perfect terrain and longer distances. First, durability and build quality are paramount; a scooter needs to withstand the rigors of varied surfaces without faltering. Second, battery range is critical; rural areas often mean longer distances between points of interest, so a scooter that can go the distance on a single charge is essential. We also assess the stability and suspension, as bumpy roads or uneven ground can be common. Finally, comfort and ease of use, including the adjustability of the seat and tiller, are important for ensuring a pleasant riding experience over longer periods. The ability to easily transport the scooter, perhaps for trips to town, is also a significant consideration.

Budget Planning

Scooters for rural roads can range significantly in price, from budget-friendly models to premium, heavy-duty options. For the best budget scooters, you might find yourself making compromises on range or suspension, but models like the Drive Medical Scout offer a great balance. If your budget allows for more investment, you can opt for scooters with longer ranges and more advanced features, like the Rascal Conquest. Consider your typical usage patterns: if you’ll only be using it for short trips around your property, a less expensive model might suffice. However, for extensive exploration or regular travel, investing in a higher-quality scooter will likely be more cost-effective in the long run, reducing the need for repairs and offering a better overall experience. Think about what you’ll use it for most often when deciding on your budget.

Final Thoughts

Selecting the right scooter for rural roads involves carefully weighing your specific needs against the features each model offers. Whether you prioritize portability, long-range capability, or ruggedness, there’s a scooter out there that can enhance your mobility and independence in rural settings. We encourage you to consider the terrain you’ll most frequently encounter and the distances you plan to travel. Don’t forget to factor in ease of transport if you plan on taking your scooter to different locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the typical range I can expect from a scooter designed for rural roads?

A: Scooters designed for rural roads generally offer a longer range than their urban counterparts. You can typically expect anywhere from 10 to 25 miles or more on a single charge, depending on the model and its battery capacity. This extended range is crucial for navigating larger properties or making longer trips to nearby amenities.

Q: How important is the number of wheels for a scooter on rural roads?

A: The number of wheels significantly impacts stability. Four-wheel scooters offer greater stability and are generally preferred for uneven or rougher terrain found on rural roads. Three-wheel scooters offer a tighter turning radius, which can be beneficial in confined spaces but may be less stable on challenging surfaces.

Q: Can I use a mobility scooter on unpaved rural paths?

A: Some heavy-duty scooters with good suspension can handle unpaved paths reasonably well, but it’s essential to check the manufacturer’s specifications and user reviews. Most scooters are designed for paved surfaces, but those with larger tires and robust suspension will perform better on light off-road conditions.

Q: How do I transport a scooter designed for rural roads?

A: Many scooters designed for travel can be disassembled into lighter components for easier transport in a car trunk. For heavier, more robust models, you might consider a scooter or bike rack that attaches to the back of your vehicle, provided your vehicle can support the weight.

Q: What kind of maintenance do scooters for rural roads require?

A: Basic maintenance includes keeping the battery charged according to the manufacturer’s instructions, checking tire pressure, and cleaning the scooter regularly. Periodically, you may need to inspect the connections and frame for wear and tear. For more complex issues, consulting the user manual or a qualified technician is recommended.

Finding the perfect scooter for rural roads means balancing power, range, and stability. We hope this guide helps you make an informed decision, opening up new possibilities for exploration and independence in your rural setting. Happy riding!
