Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I started cycling last year and didn’t believe they hype train for the direction many people take the hobby. I avoided shoes that snapped into the pedals, I didn’t buy the fastest possible bike, and my seat wasn’t going to be a 3in piece of hard plastic that had a non-zero chance of being inserted into an uncomfortable position. I’ve learned that my bike frame does make a difference, the pedals don’t to any significant degree, and my seat has viable comfortable options available.Last year I challenged myself to ride a century ride (100mi) every month. In July I rode back to back 125mi rides over two days (total of 250mi) on this seat. For a man with a slightly wider hip set (I’m 5’11 200lbs) the touring seat is a dream. It’s formed so if you’re seated right your butt bones will connect in the right spot, but it also provides additional cushion. I’ve put about 3000mi on the seat so far, and while it looks used now, there are not splits and signs of significant wear. Many people warned me that cushioned seats will hurt you over time, but anecdotally I have proven that incorrect. If I rode 250mi over two days and this seat didn’t cause sore/welts etc, then I’m inclined to believe it will work for just about any amateur or hobby rider. You’re still going to need to get used to it. Cycling will always hurt your butt after hours of saddle time, by the end of the season last year though, my butt felt just fine after each new century.Buy this one. It’s the best bet for a sore butt. Also, don’t forget to use an anti chafe/perspiration cream or bar. The seat makes you comfortable, it doesn’t do magic.Quick Update: I bought a carbon fiber road bike from Canyon and wanted to try the road variant of this seat on it. While the seat is cushy and the same quality, my hips just don’t want to connect with the smaller seat as well. I’ve doubled down and bought a second “Touring” edition so I don’t have to move my original touring wikkitop seat back and forth from my hybrid and road bikes.Anyone that is a smaller frame or narrower hips, the road variant may be your go to, but for me I’m just going to continue using the touring seat.UPDATE: I’ve completed about a dozen century rides and one ride of 170 mi. I’ve also bought a second of these seats for my commuter bike. For my butt this seat does the trick. With bicycle shorts I get no saddle sores and very little sore butt. Keep in mind that any seat is going to hurt when you first start, you have to condition your body for bicyclingUpdate 2: I’ve now ridden STP (Seattle to Portland) and can say this seat held up to a 200+ mile ride. I have noticed some breakdown in the cushion of my original seat. This is after about 5-7 thousand miles. I think that’s reasonable durability. Eventually I’ll replace that seat, but I’m still using it now. This seat remains 5stars all day.

Customer Review: I’ve ridden 72 miles in 2 days on this saddle so far. After some usual adjusting from my last saddle during my first 40 miles of height and tilt, I’ve found this to be one of the most comfortable saddles I’ve used on my rode bike. I’m 69 years young and my butt bones sit comfortably on this saddle. I’ve got a much smoother and satisfying ride now and can put my concentration elsewhere.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I’ve owned a number of Sella Italia saddles over the years, dating back to my first Flite purchased in the early 1990s, when it was the “must have” saddle for all serious cyclists. I’ve moved away from the minimalist saddles of my racing days, and now look for saddles that will be comfortable for long rides, no matter what bike I’m riding that day. I purchased this saddle for my distance bike, a super comfortable 1993 carbon Specialized Epic SE frame that I built up for century rides and other long rides. If you’re going to be in the saddle for 4+ hours, you want to be as comfortable as possible. This saddle fits the bill perfectly. It’s so comfortable that I can ride it around in regular hiking shorts without a pad, and not be uncomfortable. With padded cycling shorts, it’s even better. The seat is well padded, but also small enough that I don’t get chafing inside the leg area, like I have on some wider “comfort” saddles. This feels like I’m riding a slender racing saddle, but with much more comfort. I like the fact that it’s a bit more slippery than some other saddles, as I like to be able to shift around all the time as I ride without having to take my weight off the saddle to do it. On a 1-10 scale for comfort, I give it a strong 9, and using the same scale, a clear 10 for overall design, comfort and style. I’ve been very happy with every Sella Italia saddle I’ve ever purchased, and this one is no different.I’d also like to note something that’s very important. Seat fitting is pretty subjective, and there’s no single “right” position for any saddle. A saddle that may cause numbness and discomfort might feel great if you adjust the saddle a few millimeters. I’ve been fortunate to have a few professional racing friends who showed me the importance of this fact. As a rule of thumb, never have the front and back of your saddle at the same level, because if you do, no matter what saddle you use, you’re bound to get some numbness. Even on a older bike like mine with relaxed geometry, I have about 5 mm of drop from the back to the front (see photo). On modern geometry, which is racing oriented and you’re positioned even lower on the front of the bike, a few more millimeters might be needed. Don’t just stick your saddle on the bike and be done with it. Try a lot of different positions, particularly with forward tilt. I’ve taken what felt like very uncomfortable saddles and made them very comfortable simply by repositioning the saddle with a bit more forward tilt. But in the end, there’s no one-size-fits-all, and this saddle is no different. What feels fantastic to me might cause another discomfort, and the truth is that when it comes to a comfortable saddle, you just have to play around to find what’s most comfortable for you. Price-wise, I couldn’t be happier, as this is priced below most of their saddles. Sella Italia saddles are made in Italy. These aren’t cheaper saddles made in some factory that is knocking out tons of cheap saddles for the biking industry. You can’t go wrong if you’re looking for high quality, solid construction, and great Italian design.

Customer Review: I am road cyclist and my rides are usually around 3 hours or more and I use padded bib shorts. I had a SMP Extra saddle that broke and I was looking for a replacement. I didn’t want to spend the $$$ on it, and saw this saddle that was significantly cheaper. I am so glad that I did, because this is easily the best saddle I have ever used. I have tried all the major brands such as Fizik, Specialized, SMP, etc. Even with the SMP, I found that I had to periodically shift around on the saddle to prevent any soreness or pinching. Not so with this one. I have used this on three rides so far and, frankly, I haven’t even noticed the saddle on the ride, so to speak, which is a very good thing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if a bike saddle is comfortable for long rides?

A: Comfort for long rides is subjective and depends on your anatomy and riding style. Look for features like gel or foam padding, an ergonomic shape, and a width that supports your sit bones. A saddle that allows you to ride for hours without numbness or pain is generally considered comfortable for long distances. Test rides or models with good return policies are recommended.

Q: What is the ideal width for a long-distance bike saddle?

A: The ideal saddle width is typically determined by the distance between your sit bones (ischial tuberosities). Wider saddles offer more support for sit bones, which is often preferred for long-distance comfort. However, overly wide saddles can cause chafing. Measure your sit bone width or consult a bike fitter for a precise recommendation.

Q: Do I need a special saddle for an e-bike?

A: While not strictly necessary, many e-bike riders benefit from wider, more cushioned saddles. E-bikes often carry more weight and are ridden for longer distances, so saddles designed for comfort and shock absorption, like the BUCKLOS Ebike Seat, can be particularly advantageous.

Q: How important is the material of a bike saddle for long-distance riding?

A: Material is very important. Gel and foam padding provide cushioning and shock absorption, crucial for reducing pressure and vibration. Leather can be durable and comfortable once broken in, molding to the rider. Materials also affect the saddle’s weight and breathability, both relevant for long rides.

Q: Can a noseless saddle really be comfortable for long distances?

A: Yes, a noseless saddle like the BiSaddle SRT can be very comfortable for long distances, especially for riders who experience numbness or pain in the perineal area with traditional saddles. By eliminating the nose, it relieves pressure on sensitive soft tissues, allowing for pain-free riding.

Choosing the right bike saddle for long distance riding is a critical step in ensuring your adventures are enjoyable and pain-free. We’ve explored some of the best options available, each with unique strengths catering to different rider needs and preferences. Whether you prioritize plush cushioning, ergonomic support, or a specialized design like a noseless saddle, there’s a perfect fit out there for you. Don’t let saddle discomfort cut your rides short. Explore these options, consider your personal needs, and get ready to experience the road like never before.
