Cons:
  • Some users report needing extra grip for the straps on very bumpy rides
  • The “siren” noise feature might be more of a novelty than a practical tool

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: The media could not be loaded. This is a solid set of lights for a bicycle! I grabbed this to install on my little guy’s bike, and it’s a perfect solution for some added visibility when the sun starts dipping low. It’s easy to install, easy to use and recharge, and works perfectly out of the box.The two units are both rechargeable, which is a huge IMHO. Both lights mount easily via adjustable rubber straps to the handlebars, seat, etc…wherever you deem it appropriate, basically. To use either light, there’s a single button to choose between the lighting modes. The headlamp has a solid high and low beam along with a flashing beam; the rear light has a solid, flashing, and “traveling” beam setting. Any combo of the two settings provides sharp, visible light…tough to miss in the dusk or dark. The headlamp also has an auxiliary thumb button for a “siren” noise, which is a nice feature.Altogether, this is a good find. The price is reasonable, the units are well-made and fit and function perfectly, and the added piece of mind is great. And, of course, it’s nice to have a bright headlight in the dark to see where we’re riding now!

Customer Review: I used this today for the first time on my bike. It seems to work fine & was very easy to install. The headlight is very bright and so is the rear light. I got this to replace my old light which had just simply worn out and had been using for years., This is a little bigger than my old one, but it sits nicely on the handlebars. I did use a little bit of grippy shelf liner to put under the stretch strap to secure to my handlebar so it doesn’t move up and down when I hit bumps in the road . I do like the alarm or bell you can press it once for an I do like the alarm bell you can press it once for a little chirp. Overall a great product for the price.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: My son loves his bike. He even rides it in the house. This bike was pretty easy to assemble grateful that the bike didn’t come with any missing pieces like some other reviews stated I would recommend this bike for kids.

Customer Review: We started off with the training wheels attached, and that definitely helped him get used to the bike. The training wheels don’t have a lot of adjustment, so they kind of just go on at the height designed, which means these training wheels are only a couple of inches off the ground. That’s OK if your kid really doesn’t have good balance, but you’ll quickly realize that these are a hindrance in their ability to progress (the training wheels are touching constantly).Fast forward a couple of months, and it was time to take the training wheels off. The bike is a 300% better product now, and rides great. My son zooms around on this bad boy all afternoon with his buddies. Without those training wheels it rides so much better – they were creating so much drag. The bike doesn’t come with a kickstand, which I think is a huge miss. Once the training wheels come off, it just gets laid down on the ground with not in use. I searched online for the replacement part from Mongoose, no such thing. Mongoose doesn’t even sell the kickstand. When searching for kickstands, there are lots of newer age versions that attach to the rear frame, but I wanted a classic center mount (which this bike is setup for). It was hard to find one, but I finally did. I shouldn’t have had to spend another $20 for the kickstand given the price of this bike.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Mountain Bikes For Kids

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best mountain bikes for kids, we look at several key factors. Safety is always number one, so we prioritize bikes with reliable braking systems like coaster brakes and handbrakes that are easy for little hands to operate. Durability is also crucial; kids can be tough on their bikes, so a sturdy frame and components are a must. We also consider the bike’s weight, as a lighter bike is easier for a child to handle and maneuver. Finally, adjustability and ease of maintenance play a role, ensuring the bike can grow with your child and be kept in good working order.

Budget Planning

Mountain bikes for kids come in a wide range of prices. Entry-level bikes suitable for toddlers and young children can be quite affordable, often focusing on simplicity and stability. As children get older and their riding skills progress, you might consider investing in a bike with more advanced features, such as suspension or better gearing, which will naturally come with a higher price tag. It’s often wise to buy the best quality bike you can afford within your budget, as a well-made bike will last longer and provide a better riding experience, potentially saving money in the long run compared to frequent replacements.

Final Thoughts

Selecting the right mountain bike for your child is about finding that perfect balance of fun, safety, and capability. Whether they’re just starting out on a balance bike or ready to tackle light trails, the right bike will foster a lifelong love for cycling. Remember to consider their size, skill level, and the type of riding they’ll be doing most often. A well-chosen bike is an investment in their health, happiness, and sense of adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What size mountain bike is right for my child?

A: Bike sizing for children is primarily based on wheel diameter and the child’s inseam. For example, 16-inch wheels are generally for kids aged 4-6, while 20-inch wheels are for ages 6-8. Always check the manufacturer’s sizing guide and have your child try the bike if possible to ensure a proper fit.

Q: Should a kids’ mountain bike have suspension?

A: For younger riders and lighter trails, suspension isn’t always necessary and can add weight and complexity. However, for older kids tackling more rugged terrain, a suspension fork can provide a smoother, more comfortable ride and better control. Many beginner bikes forgo front suspension to keep costs and weight down, which is perfectly fine for general use.

Q: How important are the brakes on a kids’ mountain bike?

A: Brakes are extremely important for safety. For very young children, coaster brakes (pedal-backwards to stop) are intuitive. As they grow, handbrakes become essential for better modulation and stopping power. Many kids’ bikes offer both, providing a gradual transition to advanced braking systems.

Q: Where can I find reviews for kids’ bikes?

A: You can find valuable reviews on retailer websites like Amazon, as well as cycling-specific blogs and forums. Look for reviews that discuss durability, ease of use, and safety features, similar to how we’ve compiled them here. Reading multiple reviews can give you a well-rounded perspective.
